Center of Excellence for Maritime, Island and Extreme/Remote Environment Security: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate is requesting applications from U.S. colleges and universities to establish and operate a DHS Center of Excellence (COE) for Maritime, Island and Extreme/Remote Environment Security. This COE will conduct fundamental research into an array of issues and challenges of global maritime domain security technology and policy. This COE also will conduct research on maritime, natural disaster and security interests in U.S. islands, territories, and extreme environments (i.e., Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Alaska). Research results will support DHS and other agencies missions to secure national maritime borders and U.S. maritime interests. This COEs research will help DHS facilitate and defend maritime commerce and global supply chains, minimize damage and expedite recovery from attacks or catastrophic events impacting maritime interests, and protect coastal population centers and critical infrastructure. DHS also seeks maritime security research that will integrate public and private resources and expertise into a coordinated effort to address maritime threats systematically. DHS is interested in proposals that address the challenges of aligning federal, state, local, and foreign government, as well as private sector security efforts and activities. DHS seeks to explore advanced technologies to support global maritime awareness and security. This COE should engage many science and engineering disciplines in order to provide far-reaching solutions to global maritime security and coastal safety issues.
