Centers for Excellence in Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) Research (CEERs) (P50): -The Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research Program of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is soliciting center grant applications (P50s) for the development of Centers of Excellence in ELSI Research (CEERs). The CEER program is designed to develop transdisciplinary research, health, and policy teams that have the expertise and flexibility to anticipate and/or respond rapidly to the large number of ELSI issues related to emerging genome technologies and information. By transcending disciplinary boundaries, CEERs will remove boundaries between and among basic and social scientists, clinical researchers and health professionals, researchers in ethics, law and the humanities and the public. Further, CEERs will help to break down barriers between people in the majority and those in communities of color, by engaging diverse representation in planning, research, policy, and training activities. In addition, the CEERs will play a role in ensuring that relevant ELSI research findings are available to policy makers in their deliberations on issues related to genome technologies and information. Finally, CEERs will be responsible for training the next generation of ELSI researchers, with particular emphasis on training researchers from minority communities. -NHGRI intends to commit approximately $3,300,000 (total costs) in FY 2007 to fund up to 3 Specialized Centers (P50s) in response to this RFA. -This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the Specialized Center (P50) grant mechanism.
