Consortia for Innovative AIDS Research in Nonhuman Primates (UM1): This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications that will study a vaccine shown to have protected at least a subset of Nonhuman Primates (NHP) from lethal Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) or Simian-Human Immunodeficiency Virus (SHIV) mucosal challenge. The goals of this program include providing support for: 1) establishment of a collaborative multidisciplinary research NHP Consortium that will primarily focus on elucidating the mechanism(s) whereby this protective vaccine has blocked initial infection or has prevented establishment of persistent systemic infection and 2) research focused on innovative approaches that include a vaccine (and/or other immune interventions) as part of strategies to eliminate SIV/SHIV proviral reservoirs or lead to sustained remission after discontinuation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in NHP.
