Drug Abuse as a Cause, Correlate, or Consequence of Criminal Justice Related Health Disparities among African Americans (R01): The purpose of this Program Announcement is to encourage epidemiologic, prevention, treatment, and services research on criminal justice related health disparities among African Americans as it relates to drug abuse and addiction. Health disparities among African Americans are a major public health concern in the United States. In particular, while African Americans represent about 12 percent of the general population, they are over-represented in the criminal justice system. This announcement is aimed at fostering new drug abuse and addiction research on criminal justice related health and disease outcomes among African Americans. Specifically, it seeks to understand risk factors and pathways between drug abuse and criminal justice involvement, and to determine the extent to which criminal justice involvement and HIV/AIDS risk are interlinked or compounded by drug abuse and addiction.
