Epigenetic Approaches in Cancer Epidemiology (R21): Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), encourages research applications that propose to evaluate profiles of methylation, histone modifications and micro RNA (miRNA) and their association with risk of developing cancer in different populations. The overarching goal of this FOA is to provide support for population based studies to define the role of epigenetic markers (methylation, histone and micro RNA profiles) changes to understand cancer etiology. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PA-10-031 that encourages applications under the NIH research project grants (R01). Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
