Hepatitis C Cooperative Research Centers (U19): Purpose. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) invites applications for Hepatitis C Cooperative Research Centers (HepC CRCs). These Centers will advance the understanding of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-host interactions, specifically the host immune response to infection, and the factors that tilt the balance between spontaneous or therapy-induced clearance and chronic persistence of HCV. Experimental observations will be validated and clinical relevance demonstrated, in appropriate, well-defined, patient cohorts. The underlying mission of the Centers is to close the gaps that currently exist with regard to defining successful immune response and identifying new targets for antiviral drugs, vaccines, and other therapeutic strategies for the prevention or treatment of acute and chronic HCV infection. Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH multi-project (U19) cooperative agreement grant mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NIAID expect(s) to award $4 million in total costs in response to this FOA, in FY 2010, to fund 4-5 new and/or renewal grants.
