Laboratory Accreditation Support 2003 through 2005: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering financial assistance to technically qualified, eligible organizations interested in the development of a national environmental laboratory accreditation system through the development of voluntary consensus standards, training, and technical assistance. For approximately eight years, a joint federal, state, and private sector effort has been underway to establish a uniform national environmental laboratory accreditation program. Accreditation is defined here as the process by which a governmental body or organization evaluates and recognizes a laboratory as meeting certain predetermined qualifications or standards. EPA anticipates funding of $200,000 per year for three years for this effort. Organizations or coalitions of organizations may apply for one or more of the following subject areas: - develop voluntary consensus standards necessary for the operation and accreditation of laboratories; - training necessary for States, laboratories, assessors, and other non-Federal entities to be able to perform their responsibilities for accreditation; and - technical assistance that could include database development and management, conference support, and proficiency testing oversight. In addition, there will be an option to extend this cooperative agreement (or these cooperative agreements) without further competition for up to two years, providing up to a total of $100,000 each year.
