Limited Competition: Renewal of Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE)[P20]: -Purpose. The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) of the NIH invites applications for renewal (competing continuation) of eligible Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grants. The objective of the COBRE initiative is to strengthen an institution's biomedical research infrastructure through the establishment of a thematic, multi-disciplinary center and to enhance the ability of investigators to compete independently for National Institutes of Health (NIH) individual research grant or other external peer-reviewed support. COBRE awards are supported through the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program, which aims to foster health-related research by increasing the competitiveness of investigators at institutions located in states with historically low aggregate success rates for grant awards from the NIH. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH exploratory grant mechanism (P20). -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NCRR intends to commit approximately $18 million in FY 2009 to support this initiative. It is anticipated that up to 9 renewal (competing continuation) applications will be funded in response to this FOA. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the NCRR provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
