Mechanism for Time-Sensitive Research Opportunities (R03): This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to support mental health and/or substance abuse services research, as well as broader-based alcohol or drug abuse research in rapidly evolving areas (e.g., changes in service systems, health care financing, policy, etc) where opportunities for empirical study are, by their very natures, only available through expedited award of support. This FOA will utilize the R03 mechanism, and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope (PAR-05-150) that solicits applications under the traditional research project grant (R01), and the Exploratory Grants for Mental Health Intervention and Services Research (R34) (PAR-06-250) mechanisms. The R03 is intended to support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. The R03 is not renewable. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the number, scientific merit, overall quality, duration, and costs of the applications received, as well as on the funds available at the participating NIH Institutes/Centers.
