Mesa Sagebrush Enhancement Evaluations: Ten 30-acre plots (approximately 300 acres) will be established as study sites. Each study site will have two 7.5-acre plots available for grazing and two 7.5-acre plots fenced to prevent livestock grazing. BLM will perform twenty different replicated treatments/controls, both with and without grazing. Treatments will include: low mowing, high mowing, mowing with forb seeding, Lawson Aerator, Dixie Harrow, chaining, light Spike 20P treatment, heavy Spike 20P treatment, and prescribed burn, and one plot will serve as a control (both with and without grazing). Monitoring will be conducted pre- and post-treatment in study years 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and may be continued in future years through 10 years post-treatment. The treatments are expected to benefit, to varying degrees, sagebrush community health, wildlife habitat, and vegetative and age class diversity restoration within the areas fire-adapted ecosystem. Comparable vegetation monitoring and analysis will also be applied at two fenced and two unfenced well pad sites proximal to the study sites, and the results of these investigations will also be described. Results from all study sites will be used to determine the most effective treatment types for potential future use on the Mesa and other areas with this type of ecosystem.
