National Consumer Network for Genetics Education: The Genetic Services Branch programs are structured to increase knowledge of the genetic contribution to health and disease and to facilitate the early identification of individuals with heritable conditions and integrate them into systems of care that are comprehensive, accessible, available, affordable, acceptable, population and community-based, culturally appropriate and family-centered and to increase knowledge of the genetic contribution to health and disease upon which services are developed. One goal of the program is to improve the publics genetic literacy. Genetic literacy includes knowing about benefits, risks, and limitations of genetic screening and testing, as well as the implications of medical genetic information in an health care setting. This project supports the Genetic Services Branchs mission and goals through an initiative that will further the publics understanding of the use of genetic medicine. The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to support a national network for genetic community-based organizations to implement genetic education based upon actual need assessments of their communities stakeholders and to increase the communitys capacity for genetic education, services and policy support by the development and dissemination of educational materials to underserved and under-represented communities. The central activities would include: dissemination of education materials; implementation of models for community coalition sustainability and development; and dissemination of guiding principles for identification and responding to genetic education and resource needs of underserved communities in an ongoing culturally sensitive manner.
