Purpose of Program: The High School Graduation Initiative (formerly known as the School Dropout Prevention (SDP) program) awards grants to local educational agencies (LEAs) and State educational agencies (SEAs) to support the implementation of effective, sustainable, and coordinated dropout prevention and reentry programs in schools that serve students in grades 6 through 12 and that have event dropout rates that are above the State average event dropout rate or are middle schools that feed students into such schools.\1\ --------------------------------------------------------------------------- \1\ According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in the 2007-08 school year, the most recent school year for which data are available, the national event dropout rate for public high schools in the 49 reporting States and the District of Columbia was 4.1 percent.
