Post Release Services for Unaccompanied Alien Children: One of the functions of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Division of Unaccompanied Children's Services (DUCS) is to provide comprehensive home studies and/or post release services for children and sponsors based on the requirements outlined in the The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 (TVPRA). A home study assesses the sponsor family unit, evaluates the potential sponsor's ability to meet the child's needs, and educates and prepares the potential sponsor for reunification with the child. The home study consists of a background check on all adults living in the home of the potential sponsor, investigative interviews and a home visit. During follow-up services a local social work agency worker provides assistance and referrals locating legal representation, verifying school enrollment, obtaining guardianship, connecting with medical, mental health and social services, and encouraging attendance at legal proceedings. A local social work agency worker meets with the child at least three times during the initial six month period following release to the sponsor. For follow-up services provided after a home study, in addition to the initial six month follow-up period, the follow-up service provider conducts, at minimum, an annual visit and quarterly phone call until removal proceedings are completed. This announcement provides the opportunity to fund providers for completing home studies or post release visits to the child and sponsor. The potential providers must be established programs in various areas of the United States and knowledgeable of the local resources available to this population. The due date for this application has changed from July 26, 2010 to July 28, 2010.
