Preapplication for Interdisciplinary Research Consortium (X02): o This announcement is the beginning of a program that will support large interdisciplinary research consortia. o The program has two phases. The preapplication phase is described in this announcement. A series of notices of limited competition describe the application process for a full consortium. Applicants may submit a pre-application for a full interdisciplinary research consortium under this announcement. Pre-applications are a necessary first step in order to be invited to submit a full consortium application. o No formal awards will be made under this announcement. o For tracking purposes, the X02 mechanism will be used. o The program is a follow on to the Exploratory Centers for Interdisciplinary Research that was initiated in FY2004 (http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-04-004.html). 21 planning awards were funded http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/interdisciplinary/fundedresearch.asp under this part of the N! IH Roadmap. This preapplication is not restricted to the 21 centers that were funded previously. o Eligible organizations include for-profit institutions, non-profit institutions, public and private institutions, units of state government, units of local government, eligible agencies of the Federal government, domestic institutions. o Any individual with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research is invited to work with their institution to develop an application.

You may submit (an) application(s) if your organization has any of the following characteristics: o For-profit organizations o Non-profit organizations o Public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories o Eligible agencies of the Federal government o Domestic Institutions While foreign institutions are not permitted to submit a pre-application, they will be allowed to participate as members of a proposed consortium. Not all of the organizations listed above will be eligible for all of the components in a full consortium.
