Recovery Act - Doi - National Park Service Repair Deteriorating Hiking Trails Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: National Park Service Recovery Act Project - At Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore youth corps personnel will work with park personnel to repair 15 miles of trails including sections of the Platte Plains, Good Harbor Bay, Shauger Hill, and North Manitou Island trails. Trails will be brushed, tread surfaces repaired and erosion control devices cleaned, repaired, and installed. Purchase and install trail markers. Signs will be repaired or replaced.NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD: This award is being made in accordance with the approved streamlined competition procedures for youth projects under ARRA. Northwest Michigan Youth Conservation Corps (NMYCC) hires students from the immediate area which enhances their ability to respond timely. This also benefits the youth by increasing the potential for an ongoing working relationship. Our work further enhances capability to leverage other funds and demonstrate sustainability supported by their successful competition for other funds. Their technical capabilities are ideally suited for the nature of this project. They have experience in building trails and restoring disturbed areas with native plantings. The organization is reaching a diverse work force including economically disadvantaged of all genders and ethnicity in the State with the highest current unemployment rate (See 16 USC Section 1723(c)(2)(b).
