SUCR ACE PLC Fencing and Trails (PMIS# 196885A): Project Description: SUCR fencing and trail work will take place within the Flagstaff Area National Monuments, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, and will include patrol and repairs to over 10 miles of boundary fence. This includes: brushing overgrown vegetation, documenting trespass sights, repairing fence, clearing downed trees, and rebuilding fence. Trail work will include: smoothing and grading of tread, brushing overgrown vegetation, stump removal, stone masonry, stone step construction, water diversion devices and other various tasks related to trail construction. Throughout this project the youth corps will be trained in the various skills and tasks it takes to complete such a project. Education will not be limited to the trails and fencing trade, but also include time with the natural resources program discussing invasive species, habitat connectivity, and the unique geology and ecology present at Sunset Crater Volcano. Cultural resources staff will also meet with the crew to discuss the pre-history and historic periods that shape the way we view Sunset Crater Volcano and the surrounding areas. Law enforcement and interpretive rangers will also meet with the crews to discuss their careers with the NPS and the impacts they make day to day.
