Science and Technology in Water Desalination and Purification: The Office of Naval Research (ONR 331) is soliciting pre-proposals and proposals in the following topic areas within the Expeditionary Unit Water Purification (EUWP) System Enhancement Program: Alternative Desalination Techniques: The goal of this area is to identify and evaluate approaches which may significantly reduce the costs, energetics, and footprint for desalination processes. These efforts will likely entail modeling, detailed energy balances, and laboratory feasibility studies. Improvements to Current Portable Desalination and Purification Units: The goal of this area is to identify and develop improvements to components of large scale portable (10,000-100,000 gpd) water desalination and purification units. Efforts are not restricted to specific components on current Marine/Army ROWPU (Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit) or TWPS (Tactical Water Purification System). Research proposals in the following areas are requested: 1) RO improvements/ alternate desalting approaches; 2) Ultrafiltration/Microfiltration (UF/MF) improvements; 3) Alternative pretreatment strategies; 4) Energy conservation and reclamation strategies; 5) Sensors and controls; 6) Post treatment: Chem/Bio removal, disinfection; 7) Brine disposal solutions.
