Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for Drug Abuse in General Medical Settings (R01): -Purpose. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) invites research applications to develop and test the effectiveness of models that integrate screening, brief intervention, and referral to specialized treatment for individuals with drug abuse entering into primary care and other general medical settings. This is a joint effort between the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). -Mechanism of Support. This funding opportunity will use the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. NIDA and SAMHSA intend to commit approximately $3.5 million dollars in total costs [Direct plus Facilities and Administrative (F and A) costs] in FY 2008 to fund six to eight new grants in response to this RFA. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon funding availability as well as the quality, duration, and costs of the applications received.
