Short Term Educational Experiences for Research (STEER) in the Environmental Health Sciences for Undergraduates and High School Students (R25): This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits Research Education Project (R25) grant applications from organizations that propose an organized short term program for high school and undergraduate students of research experiences and informational exchanges designed to impart to participants an appreciation of research on the environmental impacts on human health. This FOA will use the NIH Research Education (R25) grant mechanism. The NIEHS intends to commit a total of $600,000 to this FOA for payment of applications responsive to this announcement. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. The anticipated number of awards is ten. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Budget and Project Period: The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed five years. Direct costs are limited to $55,000 in any single year.

- Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. Eligible agencies of the Federal Government can apply. Applicant institutions: The applicant institution must provide the institutional support and commitment to the goals of the research education program. The applicant institution must have experienced faculty currently active in research related to the mission of NIEHS. In many cases, it is anticipated that the proposed research education program will complement other ongoing research training occurring at the applicant institution and that a substantial number of program faculty will have active research projects in which participants may gain relevant experiences consistent with their research interests and goals. Institutions with existing Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) institutional training grants (e.g., T32) or other federally funded training programs may apply for a research education grant provided that the proposed educational experiences are distinct from those training programs receiving NIH support. Moreover, the R25 mechanism cannot be used to circumvent or supplement Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA research training mechanisms, such as undergraduates supported by the NIH-supported T34 programs. If multiple sites are involved in the research education program, the applicant institution must be the primary site for the program. The need for and use of multiple sites must be justified.
