Spawning Sized Gravel Replenishment and Fish Screen Installation at Riparian Wing Deflector Diversions in the Merced River, California: This project will deliver appropriately sized gravel to riparian diverters on the Merced River who are willing to use it to construct their wing deflectors; install screens where necessary to minimize fish potentially entrained at the diversion; monitor screen effectiveness, and obtain all necessary environmental permits. The grantee will identify project sites based on a California Department of Fish and Game database on riparian diverters and by negotiating with potential diverters. The number of sites will be determined based on a combination of willing participants and the current cost of gravel and screens, but we expect three to five wing deflector sites. Diversion operators will add the gravel to the river to infuse spawning sized gravel into the river as they annually maintain their wing deflectors. Between three to five sites will receive 1,200 and 1.500 tons of gravel each. It is also expected that the grantee will design and install screens prior to the placement of gravel. All necessary permits will be obtained by the grantee.
