Swift Fox Distribution Survey: Monitoring the status of swift fox in Montana is a critical activity in the management of prairie species. Monitoring the status of swift fox populations is considered a high priority to successful management of the species in the ten swift fox range states. Monitoring programs require replication of survey activities at regular intervals (i.e. 4-5 years apart) and therefore by 2006 the north central Montana survey will need to be replicated and possibly expanded to determine changes in swift fox distribution since the 1999 and 2001 survey efforts. Primary objectives of the 2006 swift fox distribution surveys are to: 1) determine current distribution of Montanas swift fox population; and 2) monitor changes that have occurred in species distribution since the 1999 and 2001 surveys. Secondary objectives include using survey data to: 1) identify important swift fox habitats, both on federal BLM and private lands with native prairie habitat; 2) to assist in state and federal management planning, mitigation, and permitting actions; and 3) to focus on important prairie habitat for possible conservation easement or acquisition. Report number of acres surveyed and estimated numbers of Swift Fox found. The survey areas are located in north central Montana and will comprise approximately 300 townships in Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Hill, Blaine, Phillips and Valley counties. Deliverables: This information will be completed by December 31, 2006, and available to the BLM and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Recipient will provide a preliminary report to the BLM and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks by June 15, 2006, with survey results indicating swift fox occurrence locations.
