Water Impacts from Coal-Burning PowerPlants: NOTE: Please read the Master Funding OpportunityAnnouncement for completeevaluation criteria and instructions on how to prepare your application.https://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/1be0f2271893ba198525644b006bc0be/7dd24fd3b334d11985256f32005c0821?OpenDocumentApplications which fit the following description should be submitted underthisfunding opportunity title of Water Impacts from Coal-Burning Power Plants(DE-PS26-05NT42244-07).Thermoelectric power generation is water intensive, requiring on average 25gallons of water per kWh produced. In fact, on a national basis, thermoelectric generation uses almost as much freshwater as doesirrigation. Most of the water is used for cooling the plant. Associated with plantcoolingis the consumption of water through evaporative loss from the coolingsystem.Constraints on freshwater resources and competition from other use sectors(e.g., agriculture, industrial, public, in-stream use) will challenge theNation?s ability to provide sufficient water to meet current and futurethermoelectric generation needs. In addition, coal-based electric powergeneration can impact water quality in terms of effluent discharges frompointand area sources such as ash and scrubber liquor ponds and scrubber. Inaddition, re-circulating cooling towers require the addition of biocidesandcorrosion inhibitors that may be released during blowdown operations.Grantapplications are sought to further research for improving water qualityassociated with coal-fired power generation in the following areas: (1) useofnon-traditional waters (e.g., grey water, mine water, produced water fromoiland gas extraction) for cooling; (2) novel approaches for reducingevaporativeloss from cooling towers; (3) innovative technology for recovering andreusingwater from power plant flue gases; (4) novel approaches for the removal ofmercury, other trace metals, and nitrogen compounds from ash and scrubberpondeffluents; (5) advanced water-related sensors and controls at power plantstominimize adverse impacts to water quality, and (6) novel approaches forremoving biocides from cooling tower blowdown.
