Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine: The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) , with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) (the Sponsors) are establishing the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM) dedicated to repairing battlefield injuries through the use of regenerative medicine. Therapies developed by the AFIRM will serve trauma and burn patients in the public at large. Regenerative medicine is a promising field for tissue and organ repair and replacement. Regenerative medicine encompasses many novel approaches for the treatment of damaged tissues and/or organs by using therapies that prompt the self-regenerative capacity of the body, and by integrating cells with biomaterials for the creation of engineered tissues or organs for therapy. These innovations are possible because of several key advances, including the development of systems that can reliably induce progenitor and stem cells proliferation and differentiation, the discovery of growth factors that control tissue morphogenesis, and derivation of biomaterials and scaffolds that can guide tissue regeneration and reconstruction.
