Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Alaska CESU: The US Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU Partner for research to identify and synthesize case studies related to adaptation responses to climate-driven ecological transformation. As the climate continues to warm, ecosystems are being altered in profound ways with significant impacts to local communities¿ livelihoods. This is particularly true in the Arctic, where climate and ecological changes are occurring at a rate faster than global averages. A range of adaptation actions are already underway, yet local managers face challenges when attempting to address climate impacts due to a lack of robust analysis of effective responses. Research is urgently needed to synthesize how ecological and social systems interact; summarize lessons learned; and identify robust adaptation strategies that can respond to projected ecological changes. This funding opportunity will go to support the identification of regional case studies in the Alaskan Arctic, and for subsequent comparison to other regional case studies (i.e., in the Great Plains) in order to identify scientifically robust commonalities.
