Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), Californian CESU: The goal of this research is to provide recommendations for management, conservation and recovery in the federally endangered California Freshwater Shrimp (Syncaris pacifica) based on patterns of genetic variation. Population genetic analyses will be used to estimate the number of gene pools within the species, their spatial extent, and their effective population sizes. The results will be used to infer whether additional recovery actions may be needed to retain or boost genetic diversity, and whether genetic factors are likely to impact reintroduction success. This study requires a researcher with extensive knowledge of freshwater crustacean biology, population genetic analysis (both laboratory methods and statistical analyses), and translation of population genetic data to management recommendations for endangered species.
