Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Colorado Plateau CESU: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Western Geographic Science Center (WGSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to support development of a spatially-explicit tool to forecast coastal habitat response to sea level rise. In support of this project, we seek a CESU partnership that will focus on the field data collection needed to calibrate and validate maps of coastal wetland vegetation needed to develop this tool. The proposed work will provide USGS monitoring/research teams the ability to develop remote sensing-based models of marsh vegetation at an accuracy level high enough to produce a forecasting tool useful for coastal decision makers. Ultimately we seek a partner who 1) possesses a strong working knowledge of the NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) System-wide Monitoring Program and the NERRS Sentinel Sites Program standards for vegetation monitoring, water quality monitoring, wetland surface elevation change measurements, and establishment of a vertical reference system, and 2) a working understanding of coastal resource management needs under climate change and sea level rise.
