Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Gulf Coast CESU: The purpose of the Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC) funding opportunity is to provide requested support to the National Park Service (NPS) at Padre Island National Seashore (PINS). The overall goal of this project is to generate much needed data on the ecology of sharks using PINS. The proposed project will use creel surveys, stomach content analysis, and mathematical modeling to assess the current condition of the PINS shark fisheries. It will also determine the level of recreational fishing use of PINS waters, and lay the ground work for more detailed, strategic research on habitat use of sharks in PINS. Data from this study will provide much needed information to PINS management team to determine the most appropriate fishery (deemed a high priority need by PINS) management policies necessary to manage the important shark resource in the park. Clean water resources and habitat quality are essential for the health of all living organisms, a fundamental concept in the mission of CERC. The CERC provides scientific information and data needed to address national and international environmental issues related to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The CERC has a unique capability for conducting multidisciplinary research that includes large river floodplains, coastal habitats, wetlands, streams and lakes. Scientists at CERC form partnerships with national, state, and local agencies, nongovernmental organizations and universities to enhance scientific information needed for management of the nations resources. The CERC produces and disseminates scientific information needed for decision-making in collaboration with Federal and State land management agencies, Native American tribes, academic institutions and organizations.
