Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Rocky Mountain CESU: The US Geological Survey, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center (NOROCK), is offering a funding opportunity to attempt to understand wildlife resources in the Great Basin by examining and establishing a historical baseline against which to assess change. To that end, the Center is interested in searching museum and other databases to research and complement historical records from across the hydrographic Great Basin. In arid regions like the Great Basin, jumping mice are closely associated with riparian and moist meadows thereby providing tractable systems for simultaneously asking many applied questions. To gather appropriate data, the Center would be interested in re-surveying small mammals in the vicinity of all historical records of jumping mice across the hydrologic Great Basin. Once this data has been collected, anticipate analyzing the data for such things as species richness, diversity indices and total abundance of small mammals. Additionally, propose to characterize and assess genetic variation using a suite of genomic loci in an attempt to identify variation ranging from individual to regional-scale geographic differentiation.
