Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit (Cesu) (Pacific North West): The mission of the USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS) program is to provide biological and distributional information relevant to aquatic invasive species nationwide. The primary means of accomplishing this is through the web site http://nas.er.usgs.gov. While some taxonomic groups (i.e., fishes) are quite complete, others (i.e., plants) are not. The program's web site is considered by many state and federal agencies to be a valuable resource for information that allows them to manage for invasive species. One of the programs most notable accomplishments is the development of the NAS Alert System. This Alert System provides notification to registered users when an introduced species appears in a new area. The Alert System has been in place for two years. However, it only currently operates for aquatic animals. We have been unable to incorporate plants because of lack of personnel to add plant reports. This addition of plants has been widely requested by users. The objective of this contract is to have the award recipient help develop and populate the plant portion of the NAS database. This would include adding new species location records, sending out aquatic plant alerts to registered users, creating species fact sheets, and helping to build the plant photo and reference databases.
