Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit (Cesu) Southern Appalachian Cesu: In Fiscal Year 2001, the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII), was authorized to establish a series of Regional and Thematic Nodes throughout the country, including the southern Appalachian region. The Nodes primary purpose is to provide information, geospatial, and biological research capabilities to the various federal, non-federal, university, non-profit, and citizens within the geographic region. The Southern Appalachian Information Node (SAIN) provides information technologies, or informatics, to resource managers, educators, students, researchers, analysts, decision makers, and citizens interested in using and contributing to knowledge about the biology and ecosystems of the southeast. Using numerous internet media and techniques, SAIN partners with many providers, federal and non-federal, to make knowledge of biota and ecosystems more accessible and more understandable to a wide range of users. SAIN also partners with users to help them translate and interpret data into meaningful information, and into knowledge upon which they can act, thereby demonstrating the value of knowledge in various decision-making situations that challenge modern society. The objective of this award is to provide informatics support for the development of a Habitat Value/Private Lands Assessment Model. The result of this initiative is a quantitative tool to assess the habitat value of specific land parcels to wildlife species. This project will also evaluate ways that such a tool could be made available and used to make informed land use decisions.
