Coordinating Center for the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (U01): Purpose. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is to solicit cooperative agreement grant applications from institutions to conduct coordinating functions for the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program (BCERP). The main focus of the Coordinating Center will be to: act as a central repository and clearinghouse for cross-site data from an ongoing study of environmental influences in puberty in young girls; organize annual meetings and regular conference calls for the Steering Committee and its subcommittees, the BCERP supported investigators, and the public; facilitate the BCERP Steering Committee and the Breast Cancer and the Environment Working Group (BCE WG); and provide progress reports and updates as requested by NIH staff. These activities run parallel with two separate RFAs that solicit applications for an ongoing epidemiological investigation (RFA-ES-09-008; Limited Competition: Continuation of Studies on Early Environmental Exposures and Human Puberty (U01)) and laboratory and/or epidemiological studies on environmental influences on breast cancer risk (RFA-ES-09-009; Environmental Influences during Windows of Susceptibility in Breast Cancer Risk (U01)). The BCERP is among a select few NIH projects supporting transdisciplinary research on the interaction of chemical, physical, biological, and social environmental factors with genetic factors within windows of susceptibility throughout a womans lifespan. The Coordinating Center will play an integral role in the performance and direction of this program and will require a unique set of scientific and administrative skills.
