DOD FY04 Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) New Investigator Award (NIA): The intent of the New Investigator Award is to recognize and support independent investigators within 6 years of completing their last fellowship or postdoctoral position who have innovative ideas and new technologies applicable to prostate cancer research and treatment. Applicants may not have received non-mentored research funding in excess of $100,000 direct costs in aggregate from extramural sources as a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI. Innovation is a significant feature of the New Investigator Award. Research that is innovative may represent a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, or look at existing problems from new perspectives. As a guideline to applicants and reviewers, proposals may be innovative in a variety of ways, including the following: o Study concept - investigation of a novel idea and/or unique research question. o Research method or technology - use of novel research methods or new technologies to address a research question. o Clinical interventions - use of a novel method or technology for preventing, diagnosing, or treating prostate cancer. o Adaptations of existing methods or technologies - application or adaptation of existing methods or technologies for research or clinical purposes that are fundamentally different from those originally intended, and/or for use under novel research or clinical purposes. This list is not all-inclusive, but is intended to serve as a foundation on which to frame and present the innovative features of the proposal. In accordance with the challenge to be innovative and capture novel ideas in their early stages of development, proposals are not required to have preliminary data. Although this research is inherently risky, these proposals should be based on a sound scientific rationale that is established through logical reasoning and/or critical review and analysis of the literature. It is the responsibility of the investigator to clearly and explicitly state how the proposed research is innovative and applicable to prostate cancer. Submission to this award mechanism requires a collaborating individual (or individuals) from an appropriate discipline (clinical research, pathology, urology, etc.) who has experience in prostate cancer research. He or she must have a demonstrated record of funding and publications in prostate cancer research.
