Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) Collaborative Undergraduate HBCU Student Summer Training Program Award: The goal of the Collaborative Undergraduate HBCU Student Summer Training Program Award is to fund new or existing summer prostate cancer training programs for undergraduate HBCU students at institutions with ongoing prostate cancer research, in collaboration with HBCU faculty advisors. The applicants institution must have a record of achievement in prostate cancer research and in research training. A goal of the Collaborative Undergraduate HBCU Student Summer Training Program Award is to establish or strengthen collaboration between the applicants institution and an HBCU institution, which will lead to recruitment of talented undergraduate students from the HBCU institution to the applicants institutions prostate cancer training program. It is expected that these awards will provide educational and training opportunities for undergraduate HBCU students at an important career decision-making point. When the applicant institution is an HBCU institution, the undergraduates must be recruited from a different HBCU institution. Collaborative Undergraduate HBCU Student Summer Training Program Award proposals should address the following key aspects for the proposed prostate cancer undergraduate training program: (1) the qualifications of the Program Director (applicant), other program faculty and staff, and their experiences in training undergraduate students; (2) the training program for the HBCU students at the applicants institution; (3) the plans for trainee recruitment and for continued interaction of the applicant with the HBCU undergraduates beyond the summer internship period; and (4) the qualifications and the role of the HBCU faculty advisor. Collaborative Undergraduate HBCU Student Summer Training Program Award proposals must enroll a minimum of four undergraduate students per year. Students must spend 8 to 12 weeks during the summer participating in the program at the applicants institution. The undergraduate students in this program can be named or designated "to be named" (TBN) at the time of proposal submission; however, the criteria for selection of the undergraduate students at the HBCU must be included within the body of the proposal. One or more mentors from the applicants institution must be involved in the training program. The mentor(s) must show a commitment to the HBCU institution through a plan to provide additional mentoring opportunities to participating students at the HBCU institution beyond the summer internship period. When a proposal includes multiple staff members, a single individual must be clearly designated as the applicant. A faculty advisor at the HBCU institution must be named and his or her qualifications provided with the proposal. This faculty advisor will be responsible for working with the applicant to coordinate student activities during both the summer training program and throughout the academic year.
