Department of Defense (DOD) Fiscal Year 2006 (FY06) Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Research Program (TSCRP) Concept Award.: The intent of the TSCRP Concept Award is to fund (1) the exploration of an initial concept or theory that could give rise to a testable hypothesis; and/or (2) the development of novel preclinical tools needed to advance research in tuberous sclerosis complex. These tools may include, but are not limited to, animal models, antibodies, cell lines, assays, and reagents. Presentation of preliminary data is not consistent with the intent of this award mechanism. These awards provide investigators with the opportunity to pursue serendipitous observations and/or develop new research tools for use by the applicants laboratory and the tuberous sclerosis complex research community. It is expected that research completed through a Concept Award will provide sufficient preliminary data to enable the investigator to prepare a hypothesis-based proposal for future research or result in the development of a new tool or resource for hypothesis-driven research. Proposals must describe how the new concept or theory will enhance existing knowledge of tuberous sclerosis complex or create an entirely new avenue for investigation, and/or how the new resource or tool will advance tuberous sclerosis complex research. Submissions from complementary areas of science such as chemistry, biophysics, mathematics, engineering, etc. are encouraged as are research proposals involving consumer-scientist collaborations. Because these awards are designed for preliminary investigations, projects involving human subjects or human biological substances will not be supported through this mechanism unless they are exempt under 32 CFR 219.101(b)(4). Studies that do not qualify for exempt status will be administratively withdrawn and will not be funded.
