Department of Defense (DoD) Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program (ASDRP) Clinical Partnership Award: The Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program (ASDRP) Clinical Partnership Award supports the development of translational research collaborations between two independent investigators (faculty level or equivalent) to address a central problem or question in autism spectrum disorder in a manner that would be less readily achievable through approaches based in a single setting. One partner in the collaboration must be a clinical investigator and the other must be a clinician, and it should be clear that both have had equal intellectual input into the design of the research project. In developing a research plan, the members of the partnership should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from the bench to the bedside. The process of moving an observation forward into clinical application will involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information within the partnership. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a research discovery, or a clinicians first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. A proposed project in which the clinical partner merely supplies tissue samples or access to patients will not meet the intent of this mechanism. This award is intended to support both new and established clinicians and investigators across a broad spectrum of disciplines in research projects that are likely to make a major impact on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In interest of this intent, the required preliminary data does not necessarily have to come from the ASD research field. The fiscal year 2007 (FY07) ASDRP promotes research that will (1) improve clinical outcomes of ASD, (2) lead to better understanding of ASD across the lifespan of an affected individual, and (3) integrate basic science and clinical observations. The FY07 ASDRP encourages proposals that specifically address critical needs of the ASD community. The following areas of research are of particular interest to the FY07 ASDRP:1. Co-morbidity (e.g., manifestations such as gastrointestinal disorders, sleep, seizures, tics, immune disorders)2. Targets for Treating (e.g., clinical, molecular, cellular)3. Biomarkers and Pathology (e.g., brain and other tissues)4. Environment (e.g., clinical and basic toxicology, gene/environment interaction)5. Clinical Resource Development (e.g., biostatistics, tools and resources, research informed by clinical observations, tissue programs)It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (PI) to clearly and explicitly articulate the impact the project will have on the field of autism spectrum disorder research.
