Department of Defense (DoD) Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program(ASDRP) IDEA Development Award: The Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Program (ASDRP) Idea Development Award supports innovative research that advances the understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and leads to improved treatment outcomes. The fiscal year 2007 (FY07) ASDRP promotes research that will (1) improve clinical outcomes of ASD, (2) lead to better understanding of ASD across the lifespan of an affected individual, and (3) integrate basic science and clinical observations. Proposals must include preliminary data. However, because the program wishes to fund innovative research, the preliminary data does not necessarily have to come from the ASD research field. In addition, when appropriate, a clear statistical plan of analysis should be included. Proposals containing clinical trials or clinical research are appropriate for this award. The FY07 ASDRP encourages proposals that specifically address critical needs of the ASD community. The following areas of research are of particular interest to the FY07 ASDRP:1. Co-morbidity (e.g., manifestations such as gastrointestinal disorders, sleep, seizures, tics, immune disorders)2. Targets for Treating (e.g., clinical, molecular, cellular)3. Biomarkers and Pathology (e.g., brain and other tissue)4. Environment (e.g., clinical and basic toxicology, gene/environment interaction)5. Clinical Resource Development (e.g., methodology, biostatistics, tools and resources, research informed by clinical observations, tissue programs)Multiple Principal Investigator (PI) Option: The FY07 ASDRP supports collaborative research in order to bring a new perspective to ASD research and/or facilitate progress in the field by combined effort. Therefore, up to three investigators may work on a single project, each of which will be recognized as a PI and receive a separate award. One member of the team will be identified as the Initiating PI, who will be responsible for the majority of the administrative tasks associated with the proposal. The other member(s) will be referred to as the Partnering PI(s). All the investigators must collaborate to submit a single proposal addressing a central problem or question in ASD research. It should be clear that all investigators have an equal level of intellectual input and effort. Multidisciplinary and multi-institutional projects are allowed. If the project is multi-institutional, PIs should include plans for communication between investigators at each institution. Additionally, participating institutions must be willing to resolve potential intellectual and material property issues and to remove any barriers that might interfere with achieving high levels of cooperation to ensure successful completion of this award. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator(s) to clearly and explicitly articulate the projects innovation and the impact it may have on the field of autism spectrum disorder research.
