Department of Defense(DoD) Fiscal Year 2006(FY06) Ovarian Cancer Research Program HBCU/MI Collaborative Research Award: The overall goal of the FY06 OCRP is to eliminate ovarian cancer by stimulating and supporting innovative research in ovarian cancer. The OCRP seeks to attract independent investigators, including those from Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) institutions, to initiate research focused on ovarian cancer. Within this context, the key initiatives of this announcement are to support innovative technology, hypotheses, or experimental results that will drive the field forward. The OCRP anticipates that this approach will lead to the exploration of new ideas and perspectives on the prevention, detection, diagnosis or treatment of ovarian cancer. The FY06 OCRP is focusing only on the following three research areas of emphasisas applied to either epithelial ovarian carcinoma or primary peritoneal carcinoma: 1) etiology/tumor biology, 2) preclinical development of targeted therapeutics (excluding clinical trials), and 3) early detection/diagnosis. The intent of the HBCU/MI Collaborative Research Award is to encourage the involvement of HBCU/MI investigators in ovarian cancer research by providing mentorship and collaborative research opportunities for HBCU/MI scientists, clinicians, and trainees with limited experience in ovarian cancer research. This award will provide an HBCU/MI investigator an opportunity to collaborate with and be mentored by well-established ovarian cancer researcher(s). The goal of the collaboration is to support the HBCU/MI investigator in developing an independent, competitive ovarian cancer research program. This award is intended to provide support for HBCU/MI faculty researchers whose ability to establish an ovarian cancer research program is hampered by the lack of resources such as funding, equipment, informal collegial communication, and access to appropriate scientific journals and symposia. Approximately $1M is available to fund 1 HBCU/MI Collaborative Research Award, depending on the number and quality of proposals received. Funding for HBCU/MI Collaborative Research Awards can be requested for a maximum of $600,000 for direct costs over the entire period of performance. The period of performance can be requested for up to 4 years. In addition, indirect costs should be added as appropriate. Projects requiring lower levels of funding may also be submitted. These funds can cover salary, research supplies, tuition for special training and/or education, consultation with scientific and/or technical experts, administrative and technical assistance, purchase of essential equipment, travel between the HBCU/MI and collaborator, and travel to scientific/technical meetings. The nature of the OCRP does not allow for renewal of grants or supplementation of existing grants. Collaborating investigators may receive up to 40% of the first-year costs; however, no more than 30% of the direct costs for the full award can be granted to the collaborating investigator during the lifetime of the award. Estimated timelines for the FY06 OCRP HBCU/MI Collaborative Research Award are as follows: Preproposal submission deadline is March 7, 2006 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Electronic submission is required. Proposals will be accepted only as PDF files submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt system. The CDMRP uses a two tier review process for proposals: scientific peer review, followed by programmatic review. Details of both tiers of review can be found in the full text of the Program Announcement. Applicants should submit questions as early as possible. Every effort will be made to answer questions within 5 working days.
