DoD Vision, Translational Research Award: The FY19 VRP Translational Research Award is intended to support translational research that moves promising discoveries into clinical applications that will advance the prevention, diagnosis, mitigation, and/or treatment of eye injury or visual dysfunction associated with military-relevant trauma. Successful applications to the FY19 VRP TRA should establish a clear path to transform a discovery into new drugs, devices, or clinical practice guidelines that are ready for definitive testing in clinical trials. It is expected that an Investigational New Drug (IND)/Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) application will be submitted during or by the end of the period of performance. Applicants are strongly encouraged to include at least one collaborator with expertise in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory approval process on the investigative team. The National Cancer Institute Translational Research Working Group (TRWG) conceptualized translational research as a set of developmental pathways leading to various clinical goals (http://clincancerres.aacrjournals.org/content/14/18/5664). Applicants may consult the TRWG pathways for guidance on the design of translational research projects. Expansion Option: Expansion of a highly impactful research project that was previously funded through a VRP funding opportunity is encouraged but not required. Applicants choosing the Expansion Option must submit an Outcomes Statement (Attachment 6), which is a summary of the research funded through the original VRP award and a description of the research results, accomplishments, and outcomes from that award. Applicants should explain how these results, accomplishments, and outcomes relate to the FY19 VRP TRA application.
