Epigenetic Mechanisms in the Neurobiology of Alcohol Tolerance and Dependence (R01): -Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health, solicits Research Project Grant (R01) applications from institutions/ organizations that propose to (1) determine how epigenetic mechanisms contribute to physiological and behavioral aspects of alcohol dependence (e.g., CNS and metabolic tolerance, withdrawal); and (2) examine in animal models whether recently identified risk genes for human alcoholism are modified through epigenetic events. Because epigenetic processes may be reversible, understanding epigenetic mechanisms involved in the development of alcohol dependence will promote effective treatment and recovery interventions. Multidisciplinary collaborations using state-of-the-art technologies are likely to be necessary and are strongly encouraged. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism, and runs in parallel with an FOA of identical scope, RFA-AA-07-012, that solicits applications under the Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. It is anticipated that approximately $1.5 Million will be available to fund 4-6 grants. Applications are limited to $250,000 direct costs per year under this initiative. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
