FY 2019 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program: The intent of the authorizing legislation for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is to broaden the U.S. student population that participates in study abroad by focusing on those students who would not otherwise study outside the United States due to financial constraints. The Gilman Program provides scholarships to enable U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue credit-bearing academic studies or internships abroad. The Gilman Program helps to support the United States' national security and economic prosperity through the expansion of international opportunities for gifted American students without the financial means to further their knowledge of other countries, languages and cultures through in-person overseas experiences. The program also encourages American students to study or intern in a diverse array of countries, showcasing America's rich diversity, culture, and values to a wider number of people in countries overseas and building connections and networks between young Americans and their peers around the world.
