GTL Bioenergy Research Centers: The Genomics: GTL program (GTL) in the Office ofBiological and EnvironmentalResearch (BER) of the Office of Science (SC), U.S. Department of Energy(DOE),is a systems biology research program with the mission goal of developingthescience, technology, and knowledge base to harness microbial and plantsystemsfor cost-effective renewable energy production, carbon sequestration, andenvironmental remediation. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)requests that the scientific community submit applications for theestablishment of GTL Bioenergy Research Centers that develop novelbiologicalsolutions for the production of such fuels as cellulosic ethanol orhydrogen orfor other groundbreaking bioenergy research with the potential torevolutionizebiology-based energy production. This FOA describes the establishment ofup totwo multidisciplinary research and technology development Centers that willconduct comprehensive, integrated research and training programs inenergy-related systems and synthetic biology. The Centers will involvediversedisciplines that could include genomics, microbial and plant biologygenetics,proteomics, physiology, biochemistry, structural and computational biology,bioinformatics, and engineering. The FOA does not include funding forconstruction of new buildings. Each Center will be funded for up to $125million over five years: $25 million in the first year for start-up costsandup to $25 million per year for operations during the subsequent four years.Proposals should focus on the development of a single research Center. DOEintends to fund up to two research Centers.
