Internships to Connect Parks, People, and Science: NPS will support the Cooperator in mentoring students and help them acquire valuable practical experience and build relationships with professionals and organizations in the natural resources. This project creates internship opportunities for students of diverse academic and cultural backgrounds to gain skills and experience increasing understanding of natural resources in National Capital Region (NCR) parks. The National Capital Region encompasses park units in parts of the States of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Resource protection includes increased awareness and understanding of resources, as well as increased understanding of connections between the changing environment on the local flora and fauna. Public engagement and participation is enhanced by internships, volunteer opportunities, and engagement in citizen science. Scientific literacy is increased by greater understanding of the scientific method and how life cycles are tied to the physical environment. Interns will develop projects centered on natural resources with citizen science, phenology, modeling, protection, or resiliency components increasing the ability of NCR to disseminate ideas and knowledge about park resources.
