Lake Roosevelt Burbot Maturation: The mission of the USFWS Bozeman Fish Technology Center is to work with partners to conduct applied research and provide technical assistance on local, regional, and national aquatic resource issues. Sexual dimorphism in burbot can be difficult to discern as the species is seemingly monomorphic. Reliable information regarding gametogenesis is required for population status assessment and harvest modeling of the Lake Roosevelt, WA, recreational fishery. The purpose of this award is to secure the scientific expertise of Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit to describe gametogenesis and the endocrine profile in adult Lake Roosevelt burbot and develop non-invasive (ultrasound) and less-invasive (plasma sex steroids) tools to determine sex and stage of maturity. This project will have broad applications for burbot populations across the North America.
