Molecular Phenotypes for Lung Diseases (R01): -Purpose. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) solicits grant applications under this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to stimulate research that will define or subcategorize human lung diseases at a molecular level enabling early diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized treatment of these diseases. The measurement of whole-genome gene expression at the RNA level will be the primary approach to systematically collect molecular phenotyping data for common and rare lung diseases. In addition, this FOA encourages the integration of data from other omics approaches (e.g., genomics, epigenomics, etc.) to reinforce or validate findings from RNA expression. The data generated from this program will be made available to the broad scientific community. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications, the total amount of $16 million will be used to fund up to 6 awards of 4 years duration.
