NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD - American Eel Study: NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT to the University of Massachusetts for a study of Americal Eels, entitled "Reporductive effects of contaminants on artifically matured and fertilized American eels". UMass has successfully developed an artificial in vivo maturation protocol with subsequent in vitro fertilization for the American eel that provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore the role of contaminants on the reproductive potential and recruitment of the American eel. Until UMass's recent American eel maturation and fertilization protocol success, past attempts by other laboratories have had varying success with artificial fertilization and embryogenesis/development. The Off-Refuge Investigation will further the current understanding of contaminant impacts to American eel by investigating the impacts of contaminants on the fertility of adult female and male eels and the survival of embryos and larvae within a laboratory setting.
