Opportunity PAR-10-222: Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) (http://www.nibib.nih.gov), and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov), is intended to encourage innovative and high risk/impact research in the area of physics/mechanics of embryonic development to be explored in model organisms. The research proposed under this program can explore approaches and concepts new to the area of developmental tissue mechanics; research and development of new technologies; or initial research and development of data upon which significant future research may be built. The focus of this FOA is to promote research aimed at generating new and critical information about tissue mechanics relevant to vertebrate development and understanding the basis for developmental disorders. While minimal or no preliminary data are expected to be described, applications should clearly indicate the significance of the proposed work and that the proposed research and/or development is scientifically sound, that the qualifications of the investigators are appropriate, and that resources available to the investigators are adequate. Mechanism of Support. This FOA will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) award mechanism and runs in parallel with a FOA of identical scientific scope, PAR-10-221, that encourages applications under the NIH Research Project Grant (R01) mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.
