Small Grants for Lung Tissue Research (R03): -Purpose. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) solicits research grant applications from applicant organizations that propose to conduct tissue-based research on interstitial fibrotic lung disease and/or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Supported projects will be required to utilize lung biospecimens and data collected by the Lung Tissue Research Consortium (LTRC). The goal of this initiative is to promote tissue-based research on COPD and interstitial fibrotic lung conditions, including studies to establish proof-of-concept in humans for novel mechanisms of pathogenesis. -Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the NIH Small Grant (R03) award mechanism. -Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The NHLBI intends to commit approximately $1 million in FY 2008 to fund approximately 12 new grants and $1 million in FY 2009 to fund approximately 12 additional grants. Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds, the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications, and the availability of adequate biospecimens and data from the LTRC.
