Stillbirth Risk Factor Pilot Project Centers for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (CBDRPs): The overall purpose of FOA #DD13-003(BD-STEPS) is to identify modifiable maternal exposures
in early pregnancy that may increase the risk for having a pregnancy affected by certain major,
structural birth defects. The purpose of this supplemental FOA is to expand the use of the
infrastructure of the Centers for Birth Defects Research and Prevention (CBDRPs) birth defects
research program to pilot the identification of modifiable exposures that may increase the risk of
stillbirths with and without major birth defects. Key objectives include: 1) conducting a pilot study
of stillbirths without major birth defects within the CBDRPs, and 2) analyzing previously collected
data from CBDRP on stillbirths with major birth defects. CDC’s mission is “to promote health and
quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability.” This program is most
closely aligned with CDC’s Health Protection Goal of “Healthy People in Every Stage of Life.”
Quantifiable and measurable outcomes will be measured against the GPRA performance goal to find
causes and risk factors for birth defects in order to develop prevention strategies.
