THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS- Monitoring Horseback Rider Use at OZAR-THIS IS NOT A REQUEST FOR APPLICAITONS: Project description: This is a continuation of research to gather baseline information that will help support the creation of the roads and trails management plan for the park, which is currently underway. This research is intended to inform and guide NPS managers in providing sustainable trail use in the park. Also, this study will provide subject matter expertise within the fields of outdoor recreation and recreation ecology.

A recent study conducted by Kansas State University at Ozark National Scenic Riverways involving horseback riding use in the park, revealed the need to continue and expand this research. This study will provide a more comprehensive picture of trail use for horseback riders and hikers, as well gauging the perceptions of trail users related to possible management actions. Data collected from these surveys will inform the Roads and Trails Plan. Park visitors will benefit from an improved trails system to more fully experience the recreational opportunities at Ozark National Scenic Riverways.

NPS staff will collaborate with university researchers by:
• Jointly participating in developing, reviewing and modifying project proposals, survey instruments, data, and or reports.
• Ensuring compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and/or the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), as well as in obtaining any necessary permits prior to project activity.
• Incorporating project findings into National Park Service operations and planning efforts.
• If available, the NPS may provide in-kind support
