California Condor Program: The San Diego Zoo organization (SD Zoo Global, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari Park and the Institute for Conservation Research) are active participants in the Condor Recovery Program, operating a captive breeding facility, a release program in Baja California, and displaying condors as a public information, education and outreach capability. Activities are permitted by the Service and are necessary for the survival of the highly endangered species. The Service has provided funding and expertise to develop the captive breeding facilities, and this agreement facilities the continued use of that asset. Continued captive breeding is necessary for the survival of the species, and continued active flock management is also considered a necessary part of the recovery effort. San Diego Zoo Global ensures staff, facilities and funding far in excess of those provided by the Service, and these matching funds are essential for the recovery of the species.
